The first class is now meeting for the Seniors Health Insurance Information Program. A group of volunteers are being spe cially trained by the N.C. Department of Insurance to help retired persons with their health insurance problems. They will not sell anything. N C 28782 August 24 Is Buck Ford Day The Town of Columbus will join with the U.S. Army in celebrating the accomplish ments of Edward E. 'Buck' Ford on August 24. By proclamation passed last week, the Town Council declared August 24 to be 'Buck’ Ford Day in Columbus. That is the day that Ford, born April 23, 1920 in Mill Spring, will be awarded the Distin guished Service Cross, 46 years and 7 months after being wounded in World War II. Ford was inducted into the U.S. Army March 12, 1941 and was assigned to Battery C 81st AB AA Bn 101st ABN. He qualified as a marksman with the MI Rifle on June 6, 1942 and received Glider Wings Sept. 18, 1944. During his time of service, he was awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster, and the European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon with three Bronze Stars. He was wounded twice on Jan. 4, 1945. He was recom mended for both the Congres sional Medal of Honor and Distinguished Service Cross, but has never received either one. THURSDAY, AUGUST 15,1991 Beth Laughridge Laughridge Honored As 'Point Of Light' Beth Laughridge of Lan drum has been recognized for her volunteer work as a "County Point of Light." She was presented a certifi cate of recognition by the Spar tanburg County Council in a ceremony Wednesday. Beth is one of more than 800 volunteers nationwide recog nized by the National Associ ation of Counties (NACo). Her photo is included in a recently published book, "County Points of Light," presented to President George Bush and the National Points of Light Foundation. President Bush, when cam paigning for President in 1988, referred to "1,000 points of light," average citizens who contribute to their community and country through volunteer- (Continucd On Back Page) 16 Pages Today 20C Per t op' Postmaster At Convention Columbus Postmaster Pat Keneipp, is one of the more than 1,500 delegates attending the 88th Annual National Con vention of the National League of Postmasters. The theme of the 88th con vention is a renewed commit ment to service and a pledge to live up to the Postal Service's advertising slogan proclaiming, "We Deliver." The League of Postmasters believes strongly in a continuing effort to improve upon a postal system that is both deserved and paid for by all citizens. —Community Reporter Jr. High Football Practice Tuesday Polk County Jr. High Football practice will begin Tuesday, Aug. 20 at 3:30 p.m. at Harmon Field. Coach Craig Culbreth says to come ready to practice, (old shorts and T-shirts) and bring completed physical forms and parental permission slips. Edith Gilbert, a part-time employee at the Lynn Post Office for the past seven years, was recently presented with a certificate of Appreciation for a job well done by the U.S. Postal Service. Presenting the certifi cate was Virginia Owensby, Postmaster at Lynn. Mrs. Gil bert resides in Sunny View.
